Description

Event Details The theme for the symposium is “Community in Action.” Our keynote speaker is Richard Rothstein, whose critically-acclaimed book, The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America, was published last year. The Color of Law is an explosive, alarming history that finally confronts how American governments in the twentieth century deliberately imposed residential racial segregation on metropolitan areas nationwide. The keynote will be followed by two symposium tracks: Neighborhoods and Eliminating Bias, and Housing and Opportunity. Each track has three sessions, and topics include neighborhood trauma, using disparate impact analysis to challenge the displacement of communities, intersection of segregation in housing and outcome for youth, predatory lending, and more! The symposium will conclude with a live jazz performance of “Black Music in the Fight for Civil Rights” by Dr. Damani Phillips, Professor of Music at the University of Iowa. Conference Takeaways We want people to leave this conference with a greater awareness of the intersectionality of various forms of discrimination and have the tools to turn disenfranchised communities into communities of opportunity. Each attendee will receive an Action Toolkit to effectuate change, including a copy of The Color of Law, durable printed resource materials on fair housing law and how to create communities of opportunity, action items, and more. We are also applying for CLE’s/CEU’s for attorneys, social workers, teachers and REALTORS®. The fee for the symposium is $35 ($15 for Students), which includes refreshments and lunch, as well as the Action Toolkit. The jazz performance costs $15, which includes two beverages. It will be held at the RiverCenter, 136 E. 3rd St, Davenport, Iowa. This event is open to anyone, but seating is limited. Be sure to register early.
