About Us

More than 100 years ago Goodwill founder Edgar J. Helms, who grew up in Iowa, introduced the philosophy of ''a hand up, not charity.'' Goodwill of the Heartland, which began in 1965, honors that creed in southeastern Iowa and west-central Illinois. We empower people to find a job, access the skills needed for their next job or promotion, learn about family-sustaining career paths, enhance overall life skills and reach for greater levels of independence.

In short, we help people reach their full potential through education, training and the power of work. From workforce solutions for local businesses to national partnerships that bring affordable skill training to our area, Goodwill team members want all people to meet and exceed their personal goals.

Our 18 thrift stores fuel our nonprofit mission. We accept gently used items as donations and resell them in either our brick and mortar thrift shops or online. No matter how shoppers choose to purchase, 88 cents of every dollar they spend is reinvested in local communities and people. We turn pants that no longer fit into reintegration programs for homeless and near-homeless military veterans. A stack of old books provide for job coaching and/or supported community living.
